Pack voltage vs. battery voltage

Two “voltage” numbers get mixed up constantly. The pack is the whole system — commonly 36V, 48V, or 72V — and it’s built from several individual batteries wired in series. Each battery is usually 6V, 8V, or 12V. So a 48-volt lead-acid cart typically runs six 8V, eight 6V, or four 12V batteries; a lithium cart usually uses a single 48V (or 72V) pack.

Higher pack voltage generally means more power and better hill-climbing. Most modern carts are 48V; older and budget carts are often 36V; high-performance and 4x4 carts may be 72V.

Lead-acid vs. lithium

  • Flooded lead-acid (the classic 6V/8V batteries) is the cheapest to buy. The cost is upkeep: monthly water top-offs, full charges after every use, and a typical 4–6 year life.
  • Lithium (LiFePO4) is lighter, charges far faster, needs essentially no maintenance, holds full power until nearly empty, and commonly lasts 8–10+ years. It costs more up front but usually wins on cost-per-year if you keep the cart more than a few seasons.

On a used cart, battery age matters more than cart age — always ask when the pack was installed and whether any warranty remains.

Signs the pack is wearing out

Shrinking range, sluggishness on hills, longer charge times, and a charge that doesn’t hold overnight all point to a tired pack. Lead-acid degrades gradually; lithium holds steady, then drops off near end of life.

What replacement costs

A full set of lead-acid batteries is the more affordable replacement; a lithium conversion costs more up front but resets the clock for far longer and cuts the maintenance to almost nothing. Prices move with pack voltage and brand, so price a full set — not a single battery — when you compare.
