Gas vs. Electric vs. Lithium Golf Carts
Gas: range and grunt
Gas carts refuel in minutes, handle hills and heavy loads well, and shrug off long days. The tradeoffs: engine noise, exhaust, oil changes and belts, and many gated communities restrict them. If you tow, haul, or run far from a plug, gas still earns its keep.
Lead-acid electric: the budget workhorse
Traditional flooded batteries make the cheapest carts on the lot. They’re quiet and simple, but demand real care: monthly water top-offs, full charges after use, and winter maintenance. Expect a pack to last roughly 4–6 years with good habits — and budget four figures for replacement when it goes.
Lithium: the direction the market is going
Lithium packs are lighter, charge much faster, need essentially zero maintenance, hold voltage under load (no slowdown as the charge drops), and typically outlast lead-acid several times over. The premium up front is real, but cost-per-year usually favors lithium if you keep the cart more than a few seasons. On used carts, battery age matters more than cart age — always ask when the pack was installed and whether it’s under warranty.
